The University of Brighton is committed to complying with its legal obligations in relation to recruiting people to work with children/vulnerable adults.
All applicants are asked whether they have any unspent (current) convictions in line with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act as part of the recruitment process. Having a criminal record will not necessarily bar you from working with us. This will depend on the nature of the post you are applying for and the circumstances and background of the offence(s).
However there are some posts which require the employee to have access to children or vulnerable adults as part of their normal duties, and the university will need the successful applicant to have a background check undertaken. This background check, referred to as a disclosure check, is undertaken by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) at the request of the university.
All positions that require a DBS check are clearly identified as such in both the advertisement and within the person specification/post details.
Offers of employment are subject to two written references which are satisfactory to the university. References should be from your current or most recent employment. In most situations, references will be taken following an offer of employment. In your application, you will be asked to confirm which of your referees can be approached.

Please check the advert which will state whether the role is suitable for job-sharing.
The university’s policy, procedure and guidelines for job sharing are available from the People Department who will be happy to answer any queries you may have. Email: staffrecruitment@brighton.ac.uk.
