Portfolio requirements

Thank you for your application to the University of Brighton.

To complete your application, we would like to see an online portfolio of your work.

Your online portfolio needs to be submitted as a single website link on through Your Tasks.

Check out our advice and guidance on how to create and present your portfolio.

We recommend you send us your portfolio link as soon as possible, but at least within three weeks of receiving our request.

Architectural and Urban Design MA

Your portfolio helps us understand how you think, make, and explore creative and spatial  ideas in three dimensions. We want to see your curiosity, creativity, and ability to think use materials in imaginative ways - not just finished work.

What to include

Provide 15-20 examples images of your work that show a range of your creative work from previous or current academic studies, or and including recent work you may have undertaken in practice or independently..

Include work that demonstrates:

  • spatial exploration within design
  • drawing and representation skills across a range of media
  • creative work such as, but not limited to, photography, spatial performance, augmented reality, virtual reality, projection mapping, printmaking, making
  • design ambition.

Tips:

  • Arrange your work in a clear order so we can follow how your ideas develop.
  • Label each image (title, date, material or process).
  • Quality of thinking is more important than perfection.

How to present your work

Include a title page or slide in your portfolio with:

  • Your full name
  • Course title(s) applied for. 

Combine images and written work and save as a single pdf (recommended) and share this on a platform such as Google Drive, Adobe Portfolio, or your own website.

Architecture RIBA Part 2 MArch

Your portfolio helps us understand how you think, make, and explore ideas in three dimensions. You should show your curiosity, creativity, and ability to use materials in imaginative ways. We want to see the process of your project development and completion, through both finished and unfinished work.

What to include

Provide a maximum of 15 examples of your work that show a range of your individual and collaborative creative work from previous or current academic studies and including recent work you may have undertaken in practice.

Include work that demonstrates:

  • well‑developed architectural design projects showing an integrated approach - including concept development, site/brief analysis, context studies, and multiple building types across varying scales
  • technical competency demonstrated through scaled drawings (plans, sections, elevations), structural and environmental considerations, and clear evidence of conventional architectural drafting skills
  • visual and representational skills, such as 3D visualisations, internal and external perspectives, physical or digital model‑making, sketching, and other exploratory spatial design techniques
  • a curated selection of academic and (if applicable) practice work, showing depth, engagement, and your specific role in any professional contributions.

Fine Art MA

Your portfolio helps us understand how you think, explore ideas, and approach your practice in fine art. We want to see your curiosity, creativity, and your ability to investigate ideas independently.

What to include

You should provide 15–20 pieces of work that demonstrate your artistic interests and approach in any format. This could include: 

  • paintings 
  • drawings 
  • sculpture 
  • site-specific artwork 
  • links to audio works 
  • stills and/or links to video work 
  • performance 
  • sketchbooks.

Include work that demonstrates: 

  • how you generate your art works and develop ideas.

Tips: 

  • Think about the order in which you present your images – use the sequence to tell us your creative story. 
  • Count a page from a sketch book as one image. 
  • Help us by labelling each work clearly: title, date, material/process, type of project.work and where relevant include the research that informed it, (for example, artists you looked at, theories or topics).

Games Art and Design MA

Your portfolio, together with your personal statement will enable us to determine your suitability for the course.

What to include

The portfolio should contain a minimum of five projects (approximately 30 images in total). This work can be from academic, self-initiated or professional practice. Please include a brief, written explanation of each project and include edited visual documentation of your experimentation, exploration and thinking and making process. If you would like to include video, a working game or walk-through, web projects or other media, please provide links in your portfolio.

Interior Design MA

Your portfolio helps us understand how you explore and communicate ideas through creative work. We are interested in how you observe, record, and test ideas – not just finished pieces. We welcome work made from previous or current academic studies, as well as personal explorations.

What to include

Aim for around 15 to 20 images (jpg or pdf) that show the range of your abilities and creative interests. These should include:

  • projects from previous or current academic studies
  • recent work you may have carried out in practice
  • a range of representational skills including drawing and rendering
  • sample pages from scrapbooks, sketchbooks, notebooks that show your ability to visually research a subject
  • examples of finished design schemes.

Include work that highlights:

  • an ability to draw/sketch and render images across a range of media
  • an ability to lay out and develop a floor plan
  • your sense of colour and use of pattern
  • an interest in materials
  • your overall approach to design.

Tips:

  • Arrange your work in a clear order so we can follow your ideas developing.
  • Label each work clearly: title, date, material/process, type of project.
  • One sketchbook page counts as one image.
  • Quality of thinking is more important than perfection.

Photography MA

Your portfolio helps us understand how you think, explore ideas, and develop your photographic practice. We want to see your curiosity, creativity, and experimentation - not just technical skill.

What to include

Submit 15–20 images demonstrating the current stage of your creative photographic work. This should include:

  • work on your own creative ideas
  • your understanding of how photography is practiced as an independent art today
  • proof that you can explore an idea through the creation of photographic work.

Please note:
We mainly want to see projects that show your ideas, not just your technical skills. Your portfolio should show your work, not be a description or review of it.

Tips:

  • Think about the order in which you present your images – use the sequence to show us your creative process.
  • Count a page from a sketch book as one image.
  • Help us by describing each work clearly: title, date, material/process, type of project.

Sequential Design/Illustration MA

Your portfolio helps us understand how you think, create, and explore ideas as a designer/illustrator. We want to see your curiosity, creativity, and experimentation – not just finished work.

What to include

Submit a minimum of 5 projects (30 images in total). This work can be from academic, self-started or professional practice.

Include work that highlights:

  • your experimentation, exploration and thinking and making process
  • your abilities and potential as an image maker and your understanding of illustration, design and visual culture more generally
  • what interests you.

Your portfolio should show us:

  • your ability to visually research a subject in sketchbooks or other formats
  • your ability to visualise ideas before resolving them into finished work
  • the research and development work for each of your projects
  • awareness of contemporary practice and current conversations within visual communication
  • evidence of independent work (projects and work other than those required by academic or client demands)
  • skills to produce visual work across a range of media and processes.

Tips:

  • Think about the order in which you present your images – use the sequence to tell us your creative story.
