The importance of hope in difficult times

Ghanian artist Serge Attukwei Clottey urged graduates to have “hope, belief and determination” in the face of adversity as he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate.

2 August 2019

Addressing graduates from the university’s School of Sport and Service Management and Hastings Campus, Clottey explained how his formative years growing up in Accra, Ghana, helped him become the socially-conscious artist he is today.

In his Afrogallonism project, Clottey transforms discarded plastic jerry cans into vibrant large-scale sculptures and installations, as well as hosting live performances. His exhibition ‘Current Affairs’, co-sponsored by the university, was a highlight of this year’s Brighton Festival. Clottey has been widely praised for the sustainable nature of his work at a time of environmental crisis.

The artist said he inherited his creative gene from his father, a painter, and revealed how the death of his mother “at a very important part” of his life forced him to practice the virtues of hope and belief.

Clottey’s partnership with the university’s Responsible Futures programme has seen him put on a workshop and presentation for students and staff.

Reflecting on his early steps in art, Clottey said: “Having worked in my father’s studio, I already knew how to draw and paint, but I didn’t know if this was going to be my career or just a hobby.”

After four years at college in Ghana, Clottey travelled to Brazil to continue his art education. “At the time, it was unusual for a Ghanian to travel all the way to another continent to study,” he said. “Some of my family members though I was mad, but my uncle was the one who encouraged me to take the chance - so I did.”

Clottey’s early experimental work was met with occasional “derogatory comments”, but now, having worked with the plastic “Kufuor” containers for 15 years, the artist is pleased to see his Afrogallonism practice “has been increasingly attracting the attention of galleries, media, and most recently academia.”

At this point he acknowledged the role of Professor Marina Novelli of the university, for “braving the gravel roads and 40 degree heat of La Township in her blue corporate suit.” He said Professor Novelli’s interest in his work - and her visits to Ghana - was a major factor in his collaboration with the university.

Discussing the ethos behind his art in general, Clottey added: “I challenge convention and advocate the importance of creativity. Through my foundation - The Attukwei Art Foundation - I give back to my La community through school programs, lectures, and by raising awareness about global environmental issues.”

He said his “passion, devotion and rigour" had driven him throughout his life and ended his speech with the rousing message: “Be fearless and believe in what you do - whatever that will be.”
