University of Brighton graduates snapped up three of the ten awards in a national photography contest.
1 June 2017
Winners of the Magnum Graduate Photographers Awards 2017, part of Photo London Week, were chosen by a panel of industry experts and each won a portfolio review with the panel plus tutoring from a Magnum photographer, as well as having their work presented at Photo London.
The trio all graduated with Photograph BA(Hons) degrees. They are Georgs Avetisjans, now studying Photography MA at the university; Martin Seeds, now a university Course Enquiries Officer; and Matthew Broadhead.
Matthew said: “I truly couldn't believe it. I felt honoured enough being nominated alongside practitioners whose work I admire very much.”

Georgs said: “This was great news. I have invested a lot of work, time, money and sleepless nights working on my project. I didn't have any extra time for myself or other people around. It was difficult but, at the same time, rewarding. I believed very strongly in what I was doing so I pushed to the limits. Now I'm very happy to celebrate and share my project with other people and future generations.
Georgs said of his course: “It was supportive and it expanded my visual thinking and writing. It also opened new horizons of how to approach my individual practice as a visual narrator.”
Martin said: “It’s an award that you are nominated for as opposed to submitting your work for consideration, so when I received the email telling me I was a winner I was taken aback – I had to double check as I thought it was a spam email.
“It is great to be honoured by the Magnum Photo Agency and to have your work thought of in that way by such a prestigious organisation and panel of judges.
“My course was great experience with very a supportive and insightful team of tutors and technical demonstrators. Thank you to all who work on the MA/BA Photography courses –
I could not have got this award without you.”
